AVG Spyware is produced by Grisoft. This company was formed in 1991 and has a history of producing computer security products. Their first product was called Anti Virus Guard and this has led to them adopting the brand name AVG for their security products.

Although most computer users are familiar with the term computer virus, a more recent threat to computer security is from spyware. These programs have the ability to snoop on personal information on your PC and could even be used in identity theft. The development of AVG Spyware is Grisoft's solution to this ever-growing problem.

The product is available in two versions. The AVG Anti-Spyware Free edition is a version aimed at home users for use on single computers. This version is available for free. There is also a professional version available for businesses.

The product does just what you want it to. It has an easy to use scanner that hunts down spyware that is already installed on your computer. It then has a facility to remove any malicious programs that it finds. As with other similar products, AVG Spyware has a database of known spyware that it queries to see if any of them is on your machine. This database is updated daily. Interestingly for a free program, it does not just rely on this database of known spyware. It also has heuristics that will help detect unknown threats. As the number of new spyware threats is on the increase, this is a welcome feature.

It should be noted that this product is not designed to counter the threat posed from computer viruses. This requires a specific anti-virus product. Grisoft also has a free version of their anti-virus software available for use by individuals for non-commercial use.
